Interesting fact: When introduced in series three, the American Smooth was the first dance (other than the show dance in the final) to allow lifts in the routine. Initially, two lifts were allowed, but in series four Carol & Matthew included an assisted jump in their dance, which the judges argued was a lift and were deducted points. In series five, Kelly & Brendan caused further controversy when they included three lifts in their routine, and although Craig, Len and Arlene marked them down as a result, Bruno awarded them a 10, claiming "I can't help myself". The dancers are now allowed to choreograph three lifts into their routines.
*For the calculation of averages, the score for dances marked by five judges have been adjusted down to allow for fair comparison.
